The “injunction to be that future” is a revolt against the world as it stands. Such an injunction means to cultivate an alternative world that is not dominated by the raw cunning of money, to move from the karma stream to the Dharma stream. For example, Zen master Shohaku Okumura Roshi of the Sanshin Zen Community in Bloomington, Indiana, came to Zen specifically because he did not want to be part of the “money-making” culture that defined postwar Japan. He was more interested in a form of self-discovery that Buddhism has made available to the West. And so it should be clear that Buddhism-on-these-shores is not esoteric; it is something very common, and very necessary. It is a turn away from the delusion, vanity, and destructiveness of money and its attendant bigotries. It is something offered to all people regardless of whether or not they think of themselves as Buddhists.
